Waterproof Blinds

Not all bathroom blinds are truly waterproof. Find out which blind types handle moisture, steam and condensation long-term — and which to avoid in wet rooms.

Moisture resistance explained

How waterproof blinds actually work

Not all blinds sold as "bathroom blinds" or "kitchen blinds" are genuinely waterproof. Some are simply moisture-resistant — they can handle occasional splashes but won't cope with sustained steam or condensation. Understanding the difference helps you choose a blind that will actually last.

  • Waterproof fabric coatings

Most waterproof roller blind fabrics are either 100% PVC or a polyester weave with a waterproof coating applied during manufacture. The coating creates a surface that water beads off rather than soaks into. Over time, heat and cleaning can degrade cheaper coatings — which is why fabric quality matters more than the "waterproof" label on the packaging.

  • Moisture-rated mechanisms

The headrail, brackets, and operating components are just as important as the fabric. Steel components rust, cheap plastic becomes brittle with repeated temperature changes, and standard cord mechanisms can seize when exposed to steam over time. Genuine bathroom-rated blinds use non-corrosive components throughout — aluminium headrails, stainless or coated fixings, and sealed or plastic operating parts.

  • Mould & mildew resistance

In humid rooms, mould growth on blind fabric is a common problem — particularly with natural fibres or fabrics with a porous weave. Waterproof fabrics resist mould by removing the conditions it needs: moisture absorbed into the fabric. Some fabrics also include an antimicrobial treatment as a secondary barrier, though this is less effective than a genuinely non-absorbent fabric in the first place.

Waterproof vs moisture-resistant vs wipe-clean — what the labels really mean

These terms are used inconsistently across the industry. As a practical guide: "wipe-clean" means the surface can be wiped but may still absorb sustained moisture; "moisture-resistant" means it can handle occasional splashes and humidity but isn't suited to a shower room; "waterproof" should mean the fabric and components won't be damaged by direct water contact or sustained steam. When in doubt, ask specifically about the headrail and mechanism, not just the fabric.

Roman blinds in kitchens and bathrooms: They look great, but layered fabric and humid environments are a poor combination. Even "moisture-resistant" Roman blinds can develop mould in the folds of the fabric over time. If you have your heart set on the Roman blind look for a kitchen or bathroom, ask us about PVC-backed Roman blind fabrics — they're a better bet than standard lined Romans, though still not as durable as a roller or aluminium Venetian.

The best waterproof blinds for kitchens and bathrooms

  • Best overall

    Waterproof roller blinds

Waterproof roller blinds are the top choice for moisture-prone rooms. The fabric is coated or woven from PVC or polyester with a waterproof finish — it won't absorb water, won't warp, and wipes completely clean with a damp cloth. The simple, single-layer construction means there are no gaps for moisture to collect in, and the mechanism is easy to keep clean. Available in a wide range of colours and patterns, they suit everything from a sleek modern bathroom to a country kitchen.

    • Won't warp or absorb moisture
    • Best for kitchens & bathrooms
  • Great all-rounder

    Perfect fit blinds

Perfect fit blinds are an excellent choice for bathrooms in particular. They clip directly into the window frame with no screws or external brackets, which means no fixings to rust and no gaps between the blind and the frame for condensation to collect. The mechanism is enclosed within the frame itself, well away from moisture at the glass. Available in roller and pleated styles with moisture-rated fabrics, they're the cleanest-looking waterproof option for uPVC windows.

    • Enclosed mechanism

  • Most durable

    Aluminium Venetian blinds

Aluminium Venetian blinds are genuinely waterproof from slat to headrail — the metal construction doesn't absorb moisture, won't warp, and can be wiped down or even rinsed clean. They're particularly well-suited to bathrooms where condensation is heavy and you want a blind you can clean thoroughly without worrying about damage. The one limitation is the slats: they collect dust and watermarks more readily than a flat roller fabric and need more regular cleaning to stay looking sharp.

    • Full metal construction
    • Rinse-clean capable
    • Best for heavy condensation

One thing worth knowing:A waterproof fabric on a blind with a non-waterproof mechanism won't last. The headrail, brackets, and operating components all need to be moisture-rated for the blind to perform long-term in a wet room. We only fit blinds with components rated for the environment they're going into — so you're not replacing them again in two years.

Room by room

Which waterproof blind works best in each room?

Moisture exposure varies a lot by room — a shower room is a very different environment to a kitchen window above a sink. Here's what to choose where, and why the same blind isn't always right for both.

  • Bathroom / shower room

    Waterproof roller or perfect fit

Bathrooms and shower rooms represent the most demanding moisture environment in the home. You need a fully waterproof fabric and non-corrosive components throughout — not just a fabric that says "bathroom blind" on the label. A waterproof roller blind within the recess is the most practical option. For uPVC-framed windows, a perfect fit blind with a moisture-rated fabric is equally effective and gives the cleanest possible finish with nothing to rust or corrode.

  • Kitchen

    Waterproof roller blind

Kitchens combine moisture from cooking with airborne grease — a combination that ruins uncoated fabrics quickly. A waterproof roller blind with a smooth PVC or coated polyester surface wipes clean with a damp cloth and won't absorb cooking odours into the fabric. Avoid Venetian blinds over hobs or sinks — the slats are a grease trap that becomes increasingly difficult to clean. A plain roller is the lowest-maintenance option by a clear margin.

  • Bedroom (ensuite or humid)

    Moisture-resistant roller blind

Most bedrooms don't need a waterproof blind — but if yours has an adjoining ensuite or suffers from condensation on cold mornings, a moisture-resistant fabric is worth specifying. A blackout roller blind in a moisture-rated fabric handles both requirements at once. Standard blackout fabrics absorb condensation over time and can develop mildew on the backing — a moisture-resistant version avoids this without sacrificing blackout performance.

  • Pool room / utility room

    Aluminium Venetian blind

Pool rooms and utility rooms present sustained high humidity — more demanding than even a busy bathroom. Aluminium Venetian blinds are the most durable option for these environments: the all-metal construction won't warp, corrode, or absorb moisture regardless of how wet the room gets. They can be wiped down or rinsed clean, and there's no fabric to degrade or grow mould. If you need privacy and light control in a consistently wet environment, aluminium Venetians are the only sensible choice.

  • Conservatory

    Waterproof roller or perfect fit

Conservatories experience extreme temperature swings and significant condensation — particularly on cold mornings after warm evenings. A waterproof roller blind or perfect fit blind handles this well. Perfect fit blinds are particularly suited to conservatories because they attach directly to the window frame, which means the blind moves with the glass and doesn't leave gaps around the edges where cold air (and condensation) gets in. Avoid fabric Roman blinds in conservatories entirely.

  • Cloakroom / WC

    Waterproof roller blind

Cloakrooms and downstairs WCs are small rooms that get humid quickly and often have limited ventilation. A compact waterproof roller blind is the most practical solution — easy to fit in a small recess, simple to wipe clean, and available in a huge range of colours if you want to make a feature of it. Perfect fit is also a good option here if the window is uPVC-framed and space is tight. Avoid anything with layered fabric or a corded mechanism that's difficult to clean in a confined space.

    Compact fitEasy to cleanHumidity rated

Start with the wettest room first. If you're replacing blinds gradually, prioritise the shower room or bathroom — these are the rooms where a standard blind degrades fastest and where mould and corrosion are most likely to become a health or aesthetic problem. Kitchens and conservatories can follow, but the bathroom is always the priority.

Common questions

Waterproof blinds — frequently asked questions

Straight answers to what people ask most before buying.

Do waterproof blinds really make a difference in a bathroom?

Yes — a standard fabric blind in a bathroom will typically develop warping, mould, or mechanism failure within one to three years. A genuinely waterproof blind with moisture-rated components can last a decade or more in the same environment. The difference isn't marginal — it's the difference between a blind that works long-term and one that needs replacing regularly.

What is the most What is the best waterproof blind for a bathroom? efficient type of blind?

A waterproof roller blind with a PVC or coated polyester fabric and moisture-rated components is the best all-round choice for a bathroom. For uPVC-framed windows, a perfect fit blind is equally effective and gives the neatest finish. Aluminium Venetian blinds are the most durable option for rooms with very heavy condensation or direct water exposure, such as shower rooms with no enclosure.

Are aluminium Venetian blinds better than roller blinds for a wet room?

For very high moisture environments — shower rooms, pool rooms, or anywhere with heavy condensation — aluminium Venetian blinds are the more durable choice. The all-metal construction can be rinsed clean and won't degrade with sustained water exposure. Waterproof roller blinds are easier to keep clean day-to-day, but in the most demanding environments aluminium Venetians edge ahead on longevity.

What's the best waterproof blind for a kitchen?

A waterproof roller blind is the best choice for a kitchen. The smooth, flat surface resists grease and wipes clean easily — far easier to maintain than Venetian slats, which trap cooking residue between them. Choose a PVC or coated polyester fabric and avoid anything with a textured weave that can absorb airborne grease. A plain or lightly patterned roller blind above the sink or hob is low-maintenance and practical.

Can I use a Roman blind in a bathroom?

It's not recommended. The layered fabric construction of a Roman blind traps moisture in the folds, which leads to mould growth over time — even with moisture-resistant fabrics. PVC-backed Roman blind fabrics perform better than standard lined Romans, but still don't match the durability of a roller or aluminium Venetian in a humid environment. If the Roman blind aesthetic matters to you, a kitchen window away from steam is a more suitable location.

Does fitting affect how well a waterproof blind performs?

Yes — a waterproof blind fitted with gaps around the edges still allows condensation to form on the cold glass behind the blind, which then drips onto the headrail and mechanism. A recess-fitted blind that sits close to the glass reduces this condensation build-up and helps the mechanism stay dry. Professional fitting also ensures the blind doesn't bow or pull away from the frame over time, which creates gaps and reduces performance.

Are waterproof blinds more expensive than standard blinds?

Waterproof roller blinds are typically comparable in price to standard roller blinds — the moisture-rated fabric often costs no more than a standard equivalent. Aluminium Venetian blinds are similarly priced to standard Venetians. Perfect fit blinds carry a small premium due to the frame system. The more relevant cost comparison is the long-term one: a waterproof blind that lasts ten years costs less than replacing a standard blind every two.

How do I clean a waterproof roller blind?

Wipe the fabric down with a damp cloth and mild detergent — most waterproof roller fabrics clean up easily without needing to be removed from the window. For grease in a kitchen, a small amount of washing-up liquid on a damp cloth is usually sufficient. Avoid abrasive cleaners or scrubbing pads, which can damage the waterproof coating over time. The headrail and mechanism can be wiped with a dry cloth periodically to prevent dust and moisture build-up.
